The Genealogy Guys Podcast and Vivid-Pix have today awarded the Ashland County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society the Unsung Heroes Award for a Society for the second quarter of 2019.

The Ashland County Chapter of OGS (https://ashlandohiogenealogy.org/) has been aggressively digitizing and indexing funeral home records from six establishments located in Ashland City and Ashland County, Ohio. The coverage dates vary from funeral home to funeral home. One extends from 1908 to 1956, while others' records extend to 2018.

So far, six volunteers have logged more than 700 hours working on these records. The society's first funeral home publication consisted of 2,008 record entries. The second publication, currently in the editing stage, will cover over 15,000 entries. Work has begun on the third funeral home and the estimate is that there are 13,000 to 15,000 records.

The goal of this project is to provide a complementary resource to Ohio death certificates. It will also provide information about early births in Ohio before the state mandated issuance of birth certificates. These records also often provide maiden names of mothers and places of birth for decedents and their parents.

The award is being accepted by Peggy Clemens Lauritzen on behalf of the society.
